My name is Sabathiel Cainherst, and I bet you are wondering what someone like me is doing here of all places. Yes, you heard right, Cainherst. Although, rightly I havent earned the honor of that name, but all in good time, now let us start at the beginning. Cainherst, you may have hepard that name in your travels. My family is known throughout the imperium as trophy hunters. If it has fangs, claws, or fins my family has tracked, cornered, killed, and mounted it to our wall. So much that the Empire itself contracts us to remedy situations that they deem to trivial for military force. I myself am the youngest of 23 heirs to the Cainherst name, unfortuantly be it such I am exiled till I prove myself descendant of Carin Cainherst. My life started like all the others before me. Between training at academy, learning how to track, trap and kill all matter of beast, and how to survive off the land, I can say those were my last happy memory of home. Upon turning ten the children of Cainherst were given their first challange, a hunt ordained by the head of the family, my grandfather. It was almost to easy. Little did I know that the morning after was the begining for me. Told to not return till I bring glory to Carin and the Emperor, I was alone in exile. After that my life became one hunting contract, one after another. Delivered via data slate hoping that the next would be my return order. This persisted for 19 years. I felt nothing. The thrill of the hunt was gone. It was a just an endless cycle of go here trap this exotic beast, go here kill this monstrous animal terrorizing the locals, until that night. The contract was simple travel to DXT-376 Beta, or known to the locals as Croit. "Kill animal murding the locals and dismembering livestock in the area." Simple. Unfortauntly, what the mission data left out was that Croit was some backwater, podunk planet that barely had a local government or officials. To be honest it probally was some large cat or mountain bear, boy was I wrong. After six long hours tracking though marshland to mountain pass I found myself perched on a ravine around 200 meters away from the cave lair of the beast. Time passed slowly but I didn't mind it was a calm night. A light breeze moved the grass, the sounds of animals throughout the surrounding areas kept me alert. Slow methodical movement from the cave caught my attention first. Next, the silence. The animals were gone. Out of the cave struggled at least 10, no 15 figures. All hooded in heavy cloth robes, each straining to pull a chain behind them. Horror. Frozen, my whole body. Terror gripped and and squeezed my heart as the chains pulled at this giant beast. With each step it seemed to change ever so slightly. Its skin lined with feathers tufts of which were missing revealing the sinew and bone from below. It screeched in the most unnatural of manners. The creatures features were definatly avion in nature but it was anything but natural. This was unlike anything I have ever seen. This was wrong, oh so wrong, this was evil. Suddenly a lone, large figure emerged from the Woodlands to my left. Brandishing an axe larger than myself, it ignited with flames, smoke rising, as he charged, his voice bellowing through the cool night air.
" Death to the heretics!!! By my hand, the Emperor's will be done.!!!!!"
Gunfire erupted from behind the charging man. Soldiers rushed from the treeline. All I could do was watch the carnage unfold. During the chaos The avion beast had broke free from his shackles and was locked in heated combat with the man wielding the flaming axe. All the while the soldiers struggled to hold their ground agianst the superior number of the robed men. Through my scope I caught a glimpse of a metal amulet wrapped around the handle of the man's axe. At first I couldn't believe my eyes. This symbol, I've seen it in books before, however, I always thought it a myth. The inquisition symbol illuminated in my scope off the blazing axe. Like a snap the icy grasp of fear had been shattered by this image as it piercing my mind. I felt recoil, the sweet sweet recoil of my rifle as a robed figure burst into a crimson mist. My heart was pounding, threatening to beat straight out of my chest. What was this feeling? So familiar yet so alien to me. Every trigger pull, it became stronger, my hands always steady my aim ways true. My almost mechanical movements could not distract me from this feeling, this thrill, this excitement I had found. Was it the hunt I had been yearning for? Reloading. Only the large man and monstrous raptor remained. I readied myself, spotted my target and fired. Each shot rang loud, off balancing the beast causing it to realign itself. This gave the axe man an opening, time and time agian my shots rang out. Finally beast collapsed. A eerie glow originated from it and a unatrual scream turning to a low rasp filled the night air. Nothing was left other then a flaming pile of feathers, flesh, and sinew. I barely had time to register what had transpired when I heard a voice
" That was what 27 shots in a row no misses at about 150 meters." A gruff voice came from behind me as a barrel was pressed to my back
"Closer to 200," I replied. With a hearty laugh the barrel was removed.
"Okay, dont try anything stupid boy. If i wanted ye in the dirt, I would have done so before the first shot you put down range. Your not half bad and if I had to guess by the ornate marking on that rifle and how you use it you a Cainherst arent ya?" Siting up to see my ambusher, another brute of a man seeming to be in his 50s, wearing heavy battle worn armor wielding a bolt gun , that equally seemed well used.
"I am of that bloodline but dont yet posses the title. I am Sabathiel, first of my name, son of Roland. Whom do I have the pleasure of conversing with?" I coolly reply. The man stopped for a second held his hand to his neck and spoke.
" No Le'ars he wasent shooting at you. yes Le'ars hes not dead. Head back to the transport I'll meet you there. oh and dont piss with kate shes already over your shit." His attention once again focused on me.
" So heres the deal if you havent already put it togther, were inquisition and what you just witnessed is a Op that went sideways. Honestly, I blame the intel, none the less, somehow this will be my fault . Oh right my name is Drek. I lead this little outfit. Seeing what you did tonight in the face of a unnatural hellspawn most man would have fled into the night pissing themselves the whole way, but you didnt . I like that and I feel like you should meet the man running the show. Inquisitor Tollux . He might have a use for your skill set. I'm not going to lie the moneys not good, the hours suck, and you never know what your going to find. At the end of the day you have the satisfaction of knowing you've saved mankind from what ever evils blight it." Unsure if that was supposed to be a pitch or what I politely declined.
" I'm sorry Drek, as important as lending a hand to mankind's fate may be, I have a legacy of my own to secure." Bowing, i collected my rifle and turning away Drek and responded.
" that thing you helped kill that's only the beginning. Those thing get bigger, badder, and more fucked up. There is always more Hericitcs. Always meddling in the warp trying to bring their masters worst of the worst out. Well if your not interested oh well."
Those words echoed in my head Bigger Badder...... worst of the worst... turning back to face Drek a grin spread across my face
" Bigger you say.." Drek smiled
" Oh yeah bigger. " handing me a scroll with coordinates and informing me that they leave in two days to report back to the Inquistor. For the first time in 19 years I sent a data slate back and all it read was.
// TARGET ELIMINATED// NO FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS REQUIRED//
Attached was a image of the remaines of the carion beast and the inquisition seal from the scroll that served as my invitation. This was it I was finally going to surpass all those before me. I was going to hunt heretics and the monsters they serve. I would mount them to my wall and prove that I, Sabathiel, was truly a Cainherst. The one true Heir.
